Montgomery County Jail Overview
The Montgomery County Jail is operated by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in downtown Dayton. It is the county's full-service jail for adult pretrial detainees, people serving local sentences, people held on warrants, people waiting for bond, and people awaiting transfer to another court or correctional system. The facility should not be confused with MonDay Community Correctional Institution or Dayton Correctional Institution. MonDay is a community-based correctional facility for court-ordered programming. Montgomery County Jail Population
Population figures for Montgomery County Jail come from two different official sources. The ODRC 2024 annual jail inspection listed 903 total actual general housing capacity and counted 602 inmates on the inspection date. The public Persons in Custody roster showed 491 to 492 people on June 24, 2026, with a 30-minute update interval. Those are point-in-time counts, not an annual average daily population.
Earlier ODRC inspection points also help place the jail count in context. The same 903 capacity appeared in the 2021 and 2019 inspection records, with 664 inmates counted in 2021 and 796 in 2019. The June 2026 roster count was lower than those inspection-day counts, but it should be read as a live roster snapshot because jail admissions, releases, court holds, and transfers change the count during the day.

Montgomery County Jail Visits
Montgomery County Jail visitation is video-based through SmartInmate. Lobby video visits are available at no cost, and the jail says each inmate is allowed two 30-minute visits per week, with only one visit per day. Visitors must register and schedule one day ahead. A visitor without internet or computer access can call 727-349-1561 to schedule a video visit.

Visitors must wear shirts, shoes, and clothing suitable for street wear. The sheriff's page bars swimsuits, see-through tops, tank tops, tube tops, low-cut tops, and clothing jail staff deem inappropriate. Lobby visits do not reduce the separate remote paid visit path.
Montgomery County Jail Mail Money Phone
The sheriff's inmate information page is unusually detailed about family services. Ordinary mail is scanned through Smart Communications/MailGuard and made available on kiosks or tablets. The original document is destroyed after scanning. Legal mail still goes to the jail in Dayton. The jail also publishes deposit, care package, and phone-call rules.

Because the mail address is split between scanned general mail and direct legal mail, sender mistakes can delay or return important correspondence.
Montgomery County Jail Bond Programs
Bond may be posted 24 hours a day at the Inmate's Property Room Window in the Montgomery County Jail lobby. The sheriff tells the public to call (937) 224-8447 to check bond amounts before posting. The jail also warns that Ohio House Bill 1 requires a bail surcharge, up to $85 per bond, in addition to bond and court costs. Personal checks are not accepted for bond.
Jail programs add local context to custody. Recreation staff offer eligible inmates recreation and library access. The Day Reporting Program may screen non-violent sentenced offenders for a supervised alternative. The Inmate Work Program includes laundry, kitchen, commissary assistance, cleaning, sanitation, and some outside work details. Volunteer programs include domestic violence and anger control classes, alcohol and drug education, computer classes, health classes, worship, self-esteem programming, and basic literacy upon request.
Medical and mental-health services are also part of jail operations. Naphcare provides medical and dental care, and medical staff are on duty 24 hours a day. Mental-health counselors are available 24/7, with screening during booking, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention.
